Hukilau Night at Forbidden Island

Rather late notice, but as I was pondering heading off to this I realized that not everyone in the SF Bay area might be on FI's mailing list and this might be interesting to those looking to get out tonight.

Anyone else planning on going?

Aloha!

Come on over to Forbidden Island this Wednesday, March 12th, starting
at 7:00PM as we celebrate the Seventh Annual Hukilau! The Hukilau is an
annual gathering each June in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to celebrate
Polynesian Pop and the venerable Mai Kai Restaurant, the greatest
remaining original Tiki Temple in the world. The Hukilau combines live
entertainment, vendors, and educational seminars into a weekend you won’t
forget. Or won’t remember. It’s really up to the rum.

So we’re going to have a little kickoff party to get people warmed up
and in the Hukilau spirit! And you, dear mailing list readers, will
be on the inside track because you’ll have the secret password! Just
come in to Forbidden Island on the 12th after 7:00pm and ask your
bartender for the secret drink special: BIG BAMBOO! The Big Bamboo was a
drink served at the Mai Kai around 1960.	And while supplies last, it
will be served in a collectible Hukilau glass that’s yours to keep!
Plus there just might be a few other Hukilau goodies floating about, so
pop on in!

For more about The Hukilau, visit: www.thehukilau.com

For more about the Mai Kai, visit: www.maikai.com

Mahalo!

Oh my god! I can't believe it! TIKI!!!!!!!

I'm a new Tiki fan, although my credentials reach way back into the late 60's when we used to chase my baby sister around with a plastic lighted St. Francis statue and yell, "TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKIIIIIIIIIIIIII!". She would scream and run in terror! She was really scared of that thing! The only reason I can remember that we called him TIKI was because his feet were visible in sandles, and I think it must have been a derivation from the baby-talk for "stinky" (feet). At least that's my memory, and I'm sticking to it! I swear I remember my mom grabbing my little toes as a kid and saying "tiki".

My next exposure to Tiki was in high school in the early 80s. I remembered the whole TIKI thing from before and I enlisted some of my other geeky friends to randomly yell out things from the back of our various classes for no reason at all. So you would hear "OMMMMMM!" "TIKI!" and "BRIGGS!" just randomly yelled out. There's a story behind each word which I won't bore you with here, but I have recordings I made of myself in the 80s doing a ghostly "TIIIIIIKIIIIIII" call, remeniscent of the glory days of the late 60's.

I was invited by Sluggo, whom I know from the Luxuria Music chat. After spending most of my life as a "rock" fan I have really been jaded on most aspects of pop culture and can really no longer stand most music on the radio. I play the sitar myself and now prefer Indian classical music over most Western music.

But then I discovered TIKI! And lounge music, and the 50's and 60's bachelor pad sound... back when music was still cool and hadn't been QUITE as ruined by the music machine monster as it is today. And I feel as if I have found a refuge from the skull-numbingly boring "latest greatest album" from The Stones or Aerosmith. UGH!!!

And what's even cooler... there are still people making this music today, with a more modern approach, and sometimes with a retro approach. But what a discovery after 41 years of life, and almost 15 years of being jaded!

Sorry, I ramble... but I am just so happy to be amongst the TIKI-minded!

So, I say... "TIKI!" to you all!

Peace,
Mark C. "Tiki" Lowe

Ordered an indoor 6ft tiki pole from these guys recently for about $225, shipped from the Islands to Texas. Should get here today, so I'll report back on the quality, how well packaged, etc.

Looks like the "indoor" models are quite a bit cheaper than the "outdoor" ones.

Forbidden Island Paarking Lot Sale

Just found this by accident: http://blog.humuhumu.com/2006/08/28/alameda-forbidden-island-parking-lot-bonanza

On Sunday, September 24 from 3-7 p.m., Forbidden Island will be holding a sale of tiki flotsam & jetsam in their parking lot, and they’re also opening their lot to other vendors who would like to sell their wares to a collection of ideally tiki-crazed and booze-hazed patrons. The impetus for the sale is an overflow of great tiki items collected during the planning and build-out of Forbidden Island that didn’t find a final home there — including lots of bamboo. Forbidden Island co-owner Martin Cate is also adding in lots of items from his overflow of stuff at his home bar (the Novato Grotto, a.k.a. the Forbidden Island Test Lab). Vendors there will be selling tiki items, Hawaiiana, vintage clothing, vinyl, and other sundry items. Martin promises “Drink Specials!” and “Surprises!” but also, “Rodeo Clowns!,” which may be more appropriately classified as a threat. Sunday the 24th is the day before my birthday, and seein’ as how Forbidden Island will be closed on Monday, I’m unlikely to say no to any birthday drinks that come my way. Forbidden Island is located at 1304 Lincoln Ave (at Sherman) on the lovely isle of Alameda.

DJ Profile: John T.'s Thrifting for Tunes

John T.'s Thrifting for Tunes airs every Tuesday at 10AM and 6PM Pacific Time.

John Trivisonno, host of LuxuriaMusic.com's Thrifting for Tunes, has had a long-time fascination with Polynesian Pop culture... and a recently unearthed Super 8mm film showing him parading around in diapers at a luau at the Miami Beach Hawaiian Isle Motel in the mid-1960s proves it! A basement bar, trips to the Montreal Sheraton Mount-Royal's Kon Tiki Restaurant, and the exotic sounds of The Mauna Loa Islanders further fuelled his love of all things Tiki throughout the 1970s.

It was after one of his many trips to the U.S. Southwest coast - where he saw a number of well-preserved examples of Tiki bars and restaurants - that John decided to start up The Montreal Tiki Appreciation Society and its newsletter, Mai Tai, in an effort to help further the appreciation and preservation of Montreal-area Tiki culture. Mai Tai's home on the web can be found at http://www.maitaionline.com

Along with his love of mid-20th century pop culture, John has also always been passionate about music representing a wide range of eras and styles. He shares but a small portion of his musical interests with you through his selections for Thrifting for Tunes...

John has also written for a number of other publications besides Mai Tai, and his self-published work also includes chapbooks such as Dollar Days, Mental Notes, and the original, often-copied Montreal classic The Official St. Leonard Dictionary (beware of cheap, plagiarized imitations making their way around the web) which was nominated for an Expozine Award in early 2006.

Though by no means a graphic designer, John has also designed CD artwork for a couple of local jazz artists and, most notably, for singer/songwriter/composer Stan Ridgway's limited edition release The Ancient Town of Frankfurt.

When not writing his own or freelance material, John also works for an arts organization in Montreal, writing programmes, ads, study guides, and other stuff.

From the TikiEvents list (http://slick.org/mailman/listinfo/tikievents):

---

will the last Tiki lover out of Vic's please bring the spirit away with you
It is no longer welcome at the Hilton chain

In Zwecker's column today:

END OF AN ERA: For those who haven't dined at Trader Vic's in the Palmer House Hilton recently -- you better hurry. The legendary Polynesian-themed eatery is serving its last Singapore Sling and closing its doors forever New Year's Eve. In its heyday, the restaurant was a favorite Loop watering hole frequented by honeymooning newlyweds and Hollywood stars alike. The Chicago outpost of the worldwide chain of South Seas Island eateries -- famed for inventing the mai-tai cocktail -- opened in 1957.

Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund Limited Edition Tiki Mug

Tiki Farm is producing a limited edition Tiki mug with 100% of the profits going to a longtime member of the Tiki Ohana, Kristi Yacich, aka Purple Jade. Kristi is one of the key designers in the current resurgent Tiki movement. Kristi
and her husband live in New Orleans and lost everything that they own to Hurricane Katrina. The mug being sold was designed by Kristi herself. The mugs go on sale this Wednesday at 6:00pm pst on the Tiki Farm website
(www.tikifarm.com) and will only be available for purchase for a 48-hour period. This is a good cause as you'll be helping out the Tiki Ohana plus you'll also get a cool mug.

Went to La Mariana last weekend, it's pretty much the last Tiki bar on oahu. The 90 year old owner bought the chairs and puffer fish lamps from Don the Beachcomber's and The old Tahitian Lanai. She has quite the story google La Mariana if you're interested in one of Oahu's last treasures.

Just got my "Easter Island Head Incense Holder" off E-bay for $3. It's hunter orange, and is said on the box to be "black light responsive."

For a while there, Spencers Gifts had this whole line of tiki stuff, some cool (the giant rosin Easter Island heads, one 3ft. tall, that light up) and some crap (the battery-powered tiki heads on a pole with weak fake-flame at the top). When they decided to discontinue it last year, it all sold for 50% or more off. THAT was the score. Now some of that stuff is showing up on E-bay cheap.

waltsnipe (whose apt. is getting so full of crap it's starting to leak tiki)

The Fifth Annual Official Tiki Central San Francisco Bay Area Tiki Bar Crawl

Come join in the biggest Bay Area Tiki Bar Crawl yet! Four days!
Nine Bars! Savor the world of tiki with visits to bars and
restaurants both new and legendary all over the Bay Area. With loads of new tiki bars in the area, including the NEW Trader Vic’s, there’s more to see than ever! Make your plans today to join in an exciting four day weekend of good friends, good drinks, and good tikis. It all starts on:

THURSDAY, March 31st: The Big Kickoff Party

This year, Thursday night is the biggest yet! The weekend starts
early as we roll up to the legendary Trad’r Sam’s. Open since 1939 (or possibly 1937), Trad’r Sam’s is the quintessential neighborhood tiki dive bar. Step into history at this friendly watering hole for a happy hour meet and greet. Then it’s northward ho, as we forge deep into the steamy jungles of Marin County. Hack your way through the vines until you find the hidden sanctuary known only as Mr. Vise Grip’s Bamboo Bar, the hot new addition to the Bay Area Tiki scene!
Nestled inside the infamous 19 Broadway nightclub, we’ll enjoy a
night of entertainment from the Bay Area’s premier
lounge/exotica/Hawaiiana bands: Project Pimento and APE! You won’t want to miss two of the hottest bands in town tearing it up inside a tiki bar. What could be more perfect?

FRIDAY, APRIL 1st: East Bay Invasion!

The weekend kicks into high gear at the East Bay’s newest tiki
palace, The Conga Lounge! Our hosts Mike & Mano welcome us to their Rockridge retreat for dining and drinks as you end the busy week in style. Enjoy their world class selection of expertly prepared cocktails and fantastic food from their bar menu. Or enjoy the award-winning pizzas, rotisserie chicken and more from Café Rustica in tropical comfort!

After that, we’ll make our way to the place that started it all:
Trader Vic’s Emeryville! The SF Crawl is taking over the gorgeous Cook Room for a night of pure tiki bliss. Enjoy the beautiful tapa covered walls, hand carved tikis, and stunning décor of this beautifully preserved room- with its own private bar! We’ll have two bartenders just for us, so savor the drinks that have made Trader Vic’s famous around the world, including the Original Mai Tai, invented right here in Oakland! We’ll also have an incredible raffle of amazing prizes donated by artists, carvers, mug makers, and more!
Trader Vic’s will also be on hand to sell their unique and hard to
find products. All this, plus the soothing hapa haole sounds of Napa County’s own The Mai Kai Gents, featuring The Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa. What a night! For more after hours fun, DJ Mano will be spinning classic exotica well into the night back at The Conga Lounge.

SATURDAY, APRIL 2nd: SAN FRANCISCO!

Our first stop will be a very special one indeed: Trader Vic’s San
Francisco. The legend has returned after a 10 year absence and it is better than ever! Gaze in awe at the world class Polynesian décor and incredible bar, featuring the biggest rum selection in San Francisco! Then the evening kicks into high gear with the triumphant return of the legendary Tiki Bus! Board this massive rolling tiki party and settle in, because you’ve got a long fabulous night ahead.
This year the bus is even bigger & better: Seating for 50, CD Changer spinning exotica music all night, TVs showing classic tiki movies, on-board bathroom, and a server who will keep your tiki tumbler full of fresh tropical drinks all night. Then it’s off to the
world-renowned Tonga Room. Located atop Nob Hill in the palatial Fairmont Hotel, the Tonga Room has been delighting visitors for over 50 years. After happy hour, we return to the bus and pay our respects to Tiki Bob, just down the street. Though he may no longer serve drinks, this icon of tiki still maintains a vigilant watch over us all. Then off to the famous Bamboo Hut on Broadway, which will be closed to the public just for us! Enjoy their impressive décor full of vintage and modern tiki touches. And to finish it off, we’re off to the Lingba Lounge (formerly the Li Lo Lounge) on Potrero Hill to relax for the rest of the night with exotic cocktails, incredible Thai food, and three DJs from around the world spinning the finest in exotica. DJ Vrani from France and DJs The Jab & Otto von Stroheim from Alameda (who have both been around the world) Then the tiki bus will drop people off safe and sound at the world famous Phoenix Hotel, the official hotel of Tiki Crawl V. The perfect end to an amazing day!

SUNDAY, APRIL 3rd, 2005: TAKE IT EASY…

Our Sunday afternoon tradition continues: Take it nice and easy with an afternoon trip to Club Mallard in Albany. Their outside patio is decorated to the height of tiki style and their drinks are superb.
Relax and talk very slowly and quietly with other tiki lovers as you vainly attempt to piece together the events of the rest of the
weekend.

For more information about scheduling, official hotel,
transportation, and tickets for the world famous Tiki Bus, please

I went to the L.A. Autoshow yesterday and Galpin ford has brought along their latest Galpinized Vehicles. Among them was a Tiki Truck. To quote from the info sheet: Exotic polynesian theme paint job, unbelievable custom interior, custom built hot tub in the bed, generator for power, giant tiki head that opens to fill the tub with a waterfall, portable propane BBQ, frozen margarita machine, ice chest, bamboo front grill, 22" custom tiki face wheels.

This is definitely what I would buy if I won the Lotto. And yes, it comes with the hula girl already on the dash.

Hi everybody. Some of you probably know me from TC as Travellin' Tiki, or in person as Heather Watts.

Anyway, The Enchanted Tiki Room was the first place I ever heard the word "tiki." I was ten. And the song has been running through my head ever since. You can view my own tribute at the link below and (shameless self promotion warning) prints are $15 each.

http://www.theartdeck.com/secret-newsletter.htm

Just cruising around discovering new avenues of Tiki. I love to hear feedback and live to spread tiki. Incidentally, if there is anyone on here from the Vancouver (BC) area email me (heather@theartdeck.com) as tiki things are starting to take shape up here.

is anyone aware that the Tiki Room at Disneyland is closing.....TOMORROW?? I just got word of this via Tiki News yesterday....I had no idea this was happening, and frankly I'm surprised there hasn't been a petition going around or *something* to try and keep it open? Does anyone know why they're closing it? Doesn't really surprise me I guess....that place has gone to hell in a handbasket! thank god I went last year during the 40th Anniversary and got my Schwag!

Paul McCobb tiki bar in SF, cheap!

I've got an old Paul McCobb tiki bar with two stools that's got to find a new home! I keep trying to fit it into our apartment, and my wife keeps complaining about "traffic flow". We're at loggerheads, so in the interest of domestic harmony, it's got to go, and soon.

Details: it's not all that big--about 30" wide, 40" tall and 18" deep. The wood seems to be maple or some other close-grained, light-colored hardwood, with a blackened iron rod footrail and legs. It has that '50s cord wrapping around the top of the front, as well as for the seats of the two matching stools. The wood is tight and sound, but its original finish is a bit dull and splotchy.

One thing: it's missing the top, but it wouldn't be very difficult to make something that would work (originally it was just a sheet of white plastic laminate over plywood). I was planning to do a colored plastic tile mosaic and under-light it, but alas, it never came to be. I'll throw in the plastic mosaic tiles, if you want. The two matching stools are in good shape, although there is a little wear to their legs.

To see pics of it, go to http://www.hedonia.net/bar.jpg

It's yours for $60, and it's got to be picked up at our place in San Francisco within a week. Any questions? Feel free to send me a message.

Tiki Events mailing list

Otto, of TikiNews, maintains a mailing list for Tiki and related events. Check out http://slick.org/mailman/listinfo/tikievents. Most events are in California, but there have been a number of NY, Chicago, Canadian and even European listings. (Well, and Hawaiian, of course.)

Cheers!

Beach music??

I'm putting some music together for a wedding party in Hawaii. I was wondering if anyone here has suggestions for their favorite beachy/pool music? If you could email me directly on tribe that'd be great as I kind of have a hard time keeping track of all the different tribe postings. Thx!

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to see Martin Denny play onstage with 2 members of his old band. Amazing. The show also had Don Tiki, prolly the best tiki act around since Martin Denny. http://www.dontiki.com
